On the 1st of May 2021, with immense joy and gratitude we celebrate 50 years of history of the Congregation in the city of Huesca, which holds such fond memories for all the Little Sisters. It was on the 1st of May 1971, the first Saturday of the month and the feast of St. Joseph the Worker, when the first eight Sisters came to form the new community and took possession of the Asylum House.
To commemorate this anniversary, on its 50th anniversary, a solemn Eucharist was celebrated in the H. I. Cathedral, a sacred place which reminds us so much of the presence and the passage of our Father and Founder.
Julián Ruiz Martorell, bishop of the diocese, Mons. Bernardo Álvarez, bishop of Tenerife and several priests, some of them coming from other dioceses, took part in the celebration. The Reverend Mother Provincial, Sister Milagros Peláez, Provincial Secretary Sister Helga Larumbe and Little Sisters from some communities of our religious Province also accompanied us on this day. The Mayor of the city, Mr. Luis Felipe and several members of the Municipal Corporation were present. The celebration was accompanied by the choir of the cathedral.
After communion, the Reverend Mother Provincial read the congratulatory message sent by our Mother R. R. Mother General, Sister María Purificación Castro.
Sculpture of Father Saturnino in Lizana Square
After the Eucharist we went to Plaza Lizana to inaugurate and bless a sculpture of our Father Founder. The ceremony began with a few words of presentation by the priest D. José Mª Nasarre and then a little sister, an elderly person, a worker and a member of the volunteers of the residence unveiled the monument.
After a long round of applause and the rite of blessing led by Mons. Julián Ruiz, the mayor, Mr. Luis Felipe, took the floor to express his satisfaction and gratitude for the work that the Congregation is carrying out in the spirit of its Founder. Then a little sister of the Provincial Council, Mother Carmen Riádigos, addressed a few words of gratitude to all those who have made it possible for the figure of the Venerable Saturnino López Novoa to be visible in the square, in front of the house where he lived and died. A few coplas and a beautiful jota by Toño Julve, describing a few brushstrokes of the life and spirit of our Father and Founder, brought the ceremony to an end.
