The concern for social issues and his charity towards the poor were well known in the society of Huesca. His special ability to perceive the signs of the times led him to be convinced that in the era he lived in, there was no other sector of society more in need than the abandoned and sick elderly.

He believed that the Church should adapt its maternal care to the needs of the present time and took action.

Father Saturnino López Novoa founded a new Congregation, the Little Sisters of the Abandoned Elderly, in Barbastro, Huesca province, in 1873.

He received inspiration from the Spirit through his contact with the poor in the exercise of his priestly ministry. Gradually and progressively, he discovered the charism that God bestowed upon him and received a definitive impulse in 1872.
