After having celebrated with joy, fervour and enthusiasm the 150 years of foundation, a group of more than 40 Little Sisters from the different communities of the Congregation were able to attend the blessing and inauguration of a sculptural group of our Father Founder placed on the path of San Miguel of the Monastery of Montserrat, a place where many pilgrims pass daily.
The request, with the authorisation of our Very Reverend Mother General, Mother Purificación Castro, was presented to the rector of the Sanctuary, Father Joan María Mayol, in September and the proposal was accepted, asking for a simple project to be drawn up. This work was entrusted to the technical architect José Antonio Piazuelo who, with the approval of the Congregation, personally took it to the Father Rector for his approval.
Without wasting any time, the search for someone to make the sculptural group was made and after presenting the proposal to various sculptors, the commission was given to FUNDICIÓN BRONCES ARTÍSTICOS of Alcalá de Henares (Madrid), who asked the sculptor Ángel Rasero of Mejorada del Campo (Madrid) to create the mould.
Let us remember that our Father Founder tells us in his Rule of Life that, at the end of August 1894, he went on pilgrimage to Montserrat with his family, prostrated himself before the Moreneta and remained all night in prayer asking the Blessed Virgin for the grace of holiness, entrusting his Institute and all the Little Sisters to her.
The place assigned for the placement of this sculptural group has been next to the already existing one of our Saint Mother Teresa Jornet, the faithful virgin, the great collaborator that God placed in the path of the Founding Father and who knew how to contribute the gifts that God had given her and the mark of her sanctity, giving impetus to our beloved Congregation.
On February 10th at 11 a.m. the bronze sculpture of Father Saturnino arrived at the Monastery of Montserrat with a little old man to whom he gives a loaf of bread, and with the help of a feather truck it was placed on a base of Montserrat stone in the indicated place.
Its blessing and inauguration was scheduled for 17 February.
When the day arrived, the large group of Little Sisters took part in the convent mass at 11 a.m. sung by the monks of the monastery. At the same Eucharist the Congregation made an offering of a lamp which, after the homily, was blessed by Father Abbot, Father Manel Gasch. This lamp, along with so many others that already exist, will remain in the Basilica always lit as a sign that the Congregation is continually under the gaze and protection of the Blessed Virgin, and that she always has in mind, before her merciful eyes, our needs and supplications.
It has been made in ARTE LLAMAZARES of San Fernando de Henares (Madrid); it is made of brass plated in silver, and has three angels and the anagram of the Ave Maria plated in gold. Around it we can read: "Under your protection we take refuge, Holy Mother of God" and from the base hangs the coat of arms of the Congregation in polychrome glass.
After the Eucharist we all went along the road of San Miguel to the place where our Founding Fathers have been since 10 February last. The rite of blessing was officiated by Father Abbot, beginning with the reading of the Holy Gospel and a psalm. He then addressed a few words to all the group of Little Sisters and people who joined the ceremony, from which we emphasize that "at present new Congregations are being founded, but none of them is dedicated to the care and attention of the elderly. That is why your charism and your vocation - he said - is still very current". He congratulated the Congregation on the 150 years of foundation and then prayed the prayers for the blessing of images, ending with his abbatial blessing and the hymns to the Founding Father and to the Blessed Mother.
We give many thanks to God and to the Benedictine Fathers of the Monastery of Montserrat who have granted us the grace to accede to a request that has filled the hearts of many Little Sisters with joy. May the Lord grant us all the grace to imitate the life of dedication of our Founding Fathers, working with all our strength to bring the Love of God to all our communities and to the elderly who live in our Homes.
