THE MONASTERY OF MONTSERRAT INAUGURATES AND BLESSES, IN RAIN AND FOG, A SCULPTURE OF SAINT TERESA JORNET IBARS
In order to promote devotion to and spread the holiness and spirit of love for the poor of Saint Teresa Jornet, Patron Saint of the Elderly in Spain and in 13 other countries, the initiative to place her image in the Monastery of Montserrat was promoted.
On 20 June 2017, in a simple, but warm and fraternal conversation with the Father Abbot of the Monastery, Rev. Josep María Soler i Canals, the possibility of placing it in a place of this Monastery was presented to him; his response was not long in coming and was entirely favourable to collaborate in whatever was necessary, directing us and directing the proceedings to Father Joan María Mayol, Rector of the Sanctuary, who from the first moment did not spare hours of dedication and enthusiasm to promote, with great ecclesial spirit, this project.
The Town Council of Aitona, represented by its mayoress Rosa Pujol Esteve, also responded with an enthusiastic welcome to collaborate in any way necessary. The bishopric of the diocese of Lleida was no less enthusiastic when it was made known to them, and Monsignor Salvador Giménez, its bishop, expressed his willingness to do all he could.
What seemed like a difficult and complicated illusion, we were able to see how everything was becoming favourable and the difficulties were overcome with great ease.
Posters and leaflets were made and distributed to all the shops and houses in Aitona (birthplace of Saint Teresa Jornet), parishes in the diocese, neighbouring towns, friends and collaborators of the Congregation, and a bank account was opened for donations to pay for the sculpture.
The order was placed with Mármoles Rodríguez de Calatayud, and it was decided that the sculpture would be made of bronze, as it was to be placed outdoors and the aim was to ensure its good state of conservation and that, over the years, it would be maintained with the best possible quality. The sketch and sculptural group was created by the sculptor NIKOM JUNEPRUTTITUM.
The day set for the inauguration and blessing, the 8th April, the second Sunday of Easter, the feast of the Divine Mercy, was approaching with growing enthusiasm.
Several buses from Aitona and Lleida, as well as many families with their own vehicles, left very early for the Sanctuary. Hundreds of faithful of the diocese had the joy of participating in this beautiful and historic act that was prepared in the Basilica of Montserrat. A group of Little Sisters from the different communities of Catalonia and Aragon, representing many others who would also have liked to attend such a fervent celebration, also had the joy of taking part in the events planned for this day of grace and piety.
A large number of parishioners from the parish of St. Teresa Jornet in Lleida and from the Brotherhood of Our Lady of Montserrat in the city were also present, presided over by Mr. Xavier Batiste Mercadé, diocesan priest and Consiliary of the Brotherhood.
At 11 a.m. and with the Basilica filled to overflowing, the conventual Mass began with the entrance procession of the Benedictine monks of the Monastery and the row of Escolanets de la Verge who would give solemnity to the act with their delicate voices.
Everything was prepared with great precision: chants, incense, silence and recollection inside the Basilica made it possible for the event to be an anteroom to heaven. One of the beautiful moments of the celebration was the presentation of offerings, where our Congregation of Little Sisters of the Elderly Homeless presented a candle engraved with the image of St. Teresa Jornet, the coat of arms of the Congregation and the text: 175th Anniversary of the birth of St. Teresa Jornet, 1843 - 2018. A large ceramic picture with the coat of arms of the Congregation was also offered, and the Reverend Mother Provincial, Mother Milagros Peláez, accompanied by two relatives, grand-nephews and nieces of St. Teresa Jornet, Juan and Teresa Jornet Guardia, who were carrying bouquets of roses, presented a relic of the Holy Mother which will be kept and venerated from this day on in the Monastery.
The plan was that, once the hymn to the Virgin of Montserrat, the Virolai, had been sung, with which the Eucharist ended, we would all go to the esplanade on the road to San Miguel where the sculpture has been placed, to bless it, but due to the insistence of the rain that during a good part of the morning did not stop falling on the Holy Mountain, it was decided to move the planned acts of blessing and inauguration to the interior of the Basilica.
After the rite of blessing and a few words of thanks from the Mother Provincial to Father Abbot and to those who have made it possible for Saint Teresa Jornet to be here today in this place of veneration, where so many pilgrims pass daily, the veneration of the relic of Saint Teresa Jornet concluded, while the Etosca Choir, Little Sisters and all the people of Aitona sang the hymn of the Saint. On leaving the Basilica, taking advantage of the fact that it had stopped raining, despite the thick fog that surrounded the mountain at that time, simulating a great cloud of incense, many pilgrims who had come to Montserrat to take part in such a happy celebration headed towards the path of San Miguel until they reached the monument.
The sculpture shows Mother Teresa Jornet, with a face of serenity and peace, welcoming an elderly lady with one hand and with the other, pointing to heaven, as if to say: "All for the greater glory of God and the good of the poor". The image is placed on a stone pedestal, taken from a mountain in the Monastery of Montserrat itself, where a bronze plaque has been embedded with golden letters and the inscription: "Saint Teresa de Jesús Jornet e Ibars, foundress of the Congregation of the Little Sisters of the Disabled Elderly and Patron Saint of the elderly".
The Little Sisters laid a bouquet of flowers at the foot of the monument and the hymn was sung in her honour.
Afterwards, many people wanted to take photos as a souvenir of this historic day for the Congregation of the Little Sisters of the Elderly Forsaken and not least for the town of Aitona and the diocese of Lleida.
