For 11 years the Congregation of Hermanitas de los Ancianos Desamparados has not ceased in the attempt to acquire the house, consisting of 9 floors distributed in three levels, plus ground floor, where our Founder, Father Saturnino López Novoa lived from 1870 to 1905. It was in this house that he received the inspiration to found the Congregation, where he wrote the Constitutions and managed the foundation, and in this house he died after an exemplary life leaving a trail of holiness.
Providentially, in the year in which we celebrate the 50th anniversary of the arrival of the Little Sisters in the city of Huesca, we saw the great desire to have the whole property and to have carried out a rehabilitation project that allows us to remember and relive the passage of our Father Founder through these rooms, to pay homage to him and to make him known.
The date of 26 November was set for its inauguration, and it was prepared in great detail. On 25th November, our Very Reverend Mother General, Sister Mª Purificación Castro, travelled to Huesca accompanied by the Reverend Mother Carmen Atán, Secretary General. Sister Milagros Peláez, the Reverend Mother Provincial, and Sister Helga Larumbe, the Provincial Secretary, also came.
At 4.30 p.m. on 25 November, the Eucharist was celebrated in the Oratory of the house of the Founder at 4.30 p.m., with the aforementioned Mothers and the community of the Little Sisters of Huesca in attendance. It was presided over by Mons. Julián Ruiz, bishop of the diocese, with the Vicar General and several other priests concelebrating. At the end, the sculpture of the Heart of Jesus placed in the garden of the house was blessed.
On the 26th, Little Sisters from the different communities arrived to take part in the ceremonies programmed for the inauguration and blessing of the house-museum. At 11 a.m. the Eucharist was celebrated in the S.I. Cathedral presided over by Mons. Juan José Omella, Cardinal Archbishop of Barcelona and President of the Spanish Episcopal Conference. Julián Ruiz, bishop of the diocese of Huesca and Jaca, Bishop Ángel Pérez, bishop of the diocese of Barbastro and Bishop José Antonio Satué, bishop of the diocese of Teruel-Albarracín concelebrated. A large number of priests from the diocese and neighbouring dioceses also took part, as well as the mayor of the city of Huesca, Mr. Luis Felipe, the mayoress of Aitona (Lérida), the birthplace of Saint Teresa Jornet, and a representative of the town council of Sigüenza (Guadalajara), the birthplace of Father Saturnino.
Before the end of the Eucharist, our Very Reverend Mother General addressed a beautiful message to all those present about the figure of our Father Founder, his love for the Church, his life of dedication in the practice of all the virtues, especially charity, practising the works of mercy to a heroic degree. He also expressed the great joy that the execution of this project that is being inaugurated today means for the Congregation, thanking everyone, technicians and guilds, for their collaboration and professionalism.
After the celebration, all those present moved from the Cathedral to Plaza Lizana where they were welcomed by the folkloric group "Elenco Aragonés" who, with their songs and regional dances, enlivened the arrival and the rite of inauguration and blessing of the house.
